1. Accessing your server based web - Top
Microsoft FrontPage 98 allows its users to remotely manage their
FrontPage website. Once a website is published for the first time, users can make real-time changes to their web pages instead of
constantly re-publishing them (NOTE: this procedure requires the user to be connected for the duration of the changes). The following
is a step-by-step instruction of how to use this feature.
Click on the "File" menu and select "Open FrontPage Web..."
When prompted to open an existing FrontPage Web, click on the "More Webs..." button.
When prompted to "Open FrontPage Web" enter your domain name in
the space provided then click on the "List Webs" button. Select "" (or any web that is listed) and click the "OK" button.
Next, you will be prompted to enter the username and password required to publish to the website. Enter the proper information and
click the "OK" button.
2. I published but my web's not there - Top
This will happen when the "Destination Web Name" is filled in when
publishing to our server.
This box should be left blank. If you put any other name in this box
it will create a subdirectory off of your root web and copy all of your files into it. Your site will exist under a subdirectory instead of
at the top level /www where it should be. 3. Why doesn't my search bot doesn't return any results - Top
The /www directory must be world readable AND you need to
recalculate links BEFORE publishing (or after editing directly on the server). If it still doesn't work: FTP to the server and go to the
/www/_vti_txt/default.wti directory.Delete any files that begin with "ALL.". Don't delete any other files. Then using Windows Explorer, do
the same thing on your PC. Recalculate links, test locally with your browser and publish. 4. Why does FP start the Web Publishing Wizard when I try
to publish. - Top
Cancel the operation and email support to have the FP extensions installed/repaired.
5. How do I open an existing web? (Disk-based or Web-Based) - Top
1. Open FP Explorer and choose File > Open Front Page Web.
2. You can now choose to open a previously created web on your PC or your web on our server.
3. Highlight the appropriate web or type in the web address (www.yourdomain.com) and click OK.
4. Enter your USERNAME and FP PASSWORD if required.
5. Make modifications and recalculate links if needed. (See FP help docs for info on when it's necessary to recalculate links.
6. Getting Started with FrontPage (Disk-Based Web) - Top
After you have built your html documents and are ready to upload them to our server:
1. Open the web you've created on your PC using FP Explorer.
2. Choose File > Publish
3. If your "Destination Web Server" doesn't appear in the Publish window (it won't the first time you publish to our server) CHOOSE
"More Webs" and type the location of the web to publish to. Hit return. IMPORTANT: Use www.yourdomain.com as the Destination
Web Server to publish to our server. Leave the "Destination Web Name" BLANK.
4. You will be asked for your USERNAME and PASSWORD. This is your domain's USERNAME and your FrontPage PASSWORD (which may be
different than your regular telnet/ftp/POP password). If you're not sure what it is or if you aren't allowed past this point, you'll need to
contact us for a new FP password.
5. You can watch the progression of the upload by looking at the bottom left corner of FP Explorer.
7. Why is your default page still showing after I uploaded my index page? - Top
Our default page is named index.html
FrontPage doesn't always write over it, and you may need to delete it. Sometimes FrontPage creates the index.html as Index.html (with
a capital "I") 8. How do I reinstall the FrontPage Extensions if they got
corrupted? Verification of Frontpage Extensions results in abnormal program exit. I have tried to remove the Frontpage
Extensions with the intention of reinstalling them with no success. - Top
You will need to contact support so one of our techs can look into this further.
9. Why are forms, counters and other FrontPage components telling me that FrontPage extensions are not
installed - Top
This message does not necessary mean that the extensions are not
installed on our servers. More often than not, it means that when the webpage was created locally and the FP components were
configured, FP extensions were not available. In other words, you do not have the extensions installed on your computer at home.
One way around this is to connect to our server with FrontPage and configure FP components online (instead of just publishing from your local disk based web)
10. Why shouldn't I be using FTP with FrontPage? - Top
You should NOT use regular FTP (such as CuteFTP or WS_FTP) to
upload files to your site when FrontPage extensions are installed.
Doing so may corrupt the extensions.
CGI SCRIPT EXCEPTION:
If you are installing a cgi script, you will have to use a FTP program to upload the script. You should only FTP to th cgi-bin. This is
necessary, as trying to publish the script from FrontPage will not transfer the script properly.
A COUPLE OTHER EXCEPTIONS:
You can safely FTP to your /home directory.
You can also safely FTP in a subdirectory within your /www
directory. BUT you must have created the subdirectory using either your FTP program or in your SSH program. This will not work if you
created the subdirectory using FrontPage Explorer.
11. Where can I find more information on FrontPage?
- Top
Microsoft FrontPage
Microsoft Newsgroups: FrontPage for Windows
FrontPage for the Macintosh
Image ComposerNOTE: We do not provide end-user support for Microsoft
FrontPage software. We only provide support for server related issues (i.e. the server extensions) 12. How do I install the FrontPage extensions?
- Top
Go to your control panel at http://yourdomain.com/menu and click
on the "MS FrontPage" icon. Click on the "Install FrontPage" button and the FrontPage extensions will be installed within 10 minutes.
13. How do I add an additional FTP user to a FP site?
- Top
frontPage extensions are quite liable to corrupt, especially if you mix
protocols. A FrontPage web should only be published with FrontPage, and never through ftp. If someone wants a different user to
manage a subdirectory via ftp, you need to turn the subdirectory into a subweb. FrontPage will not try to communicate to that
directory when publishing the site, and so the extensions are less liable to become corrupt 14. How do I turn a subdirectory into a subweb?
- Top
1. Create the subweb by doing File --> New -->FrontPage Web .
2. Select "Import an existing web". 3. Choose a title for your web. Be sure you change the path so that
it is going to the Internet location. Click ok. 4. It will start the process to make the new web.
5. The Import Web Wizard will come up. Select "From a World Wide Web site". In the location box, put in the path to the specific
directory, for example, http://domain.com/members . This will get only that directory, and not the whole web. Click next.
6. This is where you limit the amount of information you will receive. Unless you know your pages are more extensive than these defaults,
just leave it at the default and click next. 7. Click finish and wait a few minutes as the content copies over.
15. Server Times out when publishing large sites- Top
This difficulty arises when the uploading link times out in the process
of copying the web to our server. The only suggestion Microsoft has offered so far is to break the main web into a group of sub webs
on your PC, then upload these individually. If this problem persists for you, please contact support. 16. How do I restrict access with FrontPage?
- Top
If you want to restrict access to directories, you have to turn the
subdirectories into SubWebs and use FrontPage's access restrictions. It's not that hard to do:
1. Create the subweb by doing File --> New -->FrontPage Web . 2. Select "Import an existing web".
3. Choose a title for your web. Since you can only restrict access to a web that's on the server, be sure you change the path so that
it is going to the Internet location. Click ok.
Unless you know your pages are more extensive than these defaults
, just leave it at the default and click next. 7. Click finish and wait a few minutes as the content copies over.
At this point, you have all your information in a new web. Now you can set up the restrictions.
1. In the FrontPage Explorer, click on Tools --> Permissions... 2. Select "use unique permissions for this web". Click apply at this time.
3. Click on the users tab. 4. Select "only registered users have browse access". 5. Add any users you need, and then click ok.
17. How should I move my existing FP site to your server?- Top
If someone is moving their domain from one server to another and
they wish to maintain their navigational structure, they need to open their current web and publish (File --> publish) the site to the new location.
18. Getting Error "Root Web Busy"- Top
FTP to your site and remove the "service.lck" file in /www/_vti_pvt.
This usually happens when an FP session is interrupted before completion. 19. Getting Started with FrontPage (Web Based)
- Top

name You do not need to put in the "www" before it.
3. Click on List Webs to show the FrontPage webs.
4. Choose the sub-web you wish to edit. 20. FrontPage and Secure Forms don't work- Top
FrontPage and secure forms don't work together. We have verified this with Microsoft.
You can still use the FormMail script. You will need to change the script location to the Formmail script. 21. How do I change the FrontPage username or password
?- Top
To change the user and password for FrontPage login:
Go to the FP menu:
1. Click: Tools->Permissions [Tools->Security in FP2000]
2. Add: Name, Password
3. click "Administer, author and browse.." radio button
4. Click "Apply" and then "Ok".
To change the password:
Click: Tools->Change Password [Tools->Security->Change Password in FP2000]
Type in old password, then new.
NOTE: Changing the Control Panel password does not change the FP password. When the Control Panel password is changed for an
account, the user name and password must be changed manually in your FrontPage program if you are using the frontpage security. Log
onto the subweb with the old password to make this change. Back to Top
